What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram is an ancient tool that has been recognized by some within all three monotheistic religions. Its oldest Christian usage goes back to the fourth century. According to Richard Rohr
, the Enneagram is useful for "the discernment of spirits". In other words, it can help us recognize our False Self, and to lead us to revealing our who we are in God: our True Self. Originally intended to help spiritual leaders lead others into transformation, the Enneagram makes us face our own darkness and leads us to confront that same darkness revealed in "culture, oppression, injustice, and human degradation." (Rohr)
Why is it important to "discern spirits" ?
Each of us has put together a story to help us we explain why everything we is necessary and good. We must reveal the False Self and distance ourselves from our illusions. "With the self-knowledge that the Enneagram gives us, we are not dealing only with the acknowledgement of sin. (Note: In the Enneagram tradition, “sin” is simply that which doesn’t work, i.e. self-defeating behavior.) We are also letting go of what only seems good in order to discover what in us is really good: our soul, our True Self," says Rohr.
